Durham fraud-related crime leaps 21 percent in the first-quarter

Posted by news | Filed under All News Stories, Crime, Durham

At this week’s Durham Police Services Board meeting, a presentation was made regarding first quarter crime stats. Fraud-related crimes, including counterfeit credit cards and identity theft, are up 21 percent from the same period last year. Chief Mike Ewles says people need to be vigilant in protecting their financial information, and one way to do that, is to regularly change your credit or debit card pin number.  Other stats released show break and enters were up 20 percent in the first quarter and shoplifting up a whopping 50 percent.  Officials believe the recent mild weather had a lot to do with that, as crime rates usually drop during the cold winter months.
