Several organizations are sounding the alarm, with regards to poverty in Ontario following the release of the provincial budget. The Liberals are proposing that welfare rates be frozen and Patti Encinas, a health care worker with CUPE says this move will only make things worse for those already living in poverty. She says welfare rates are already well below where they need to be, thanks to similar cuts by previous governments. Encinas says the maximum a person on welfare can currently receive is $599 a month, when they should be getting $938 just to make ends meet. Officials say when inflation is taken into account, people on welfare are receiving about 60 percent less money than they were in the 90’s and it’s time to share a little austerity with the rich. If welfare rates for the poor are frozen, they believe there should be a roll-back of corporate tax cuts.
