Federal government imposing harsher penalties to combat elder abuse

The Federal Government is moving ahead with changes to the Criminal Code to combat elder abuse.  Justice Minister Rob Nicholson says the proposed amendment would provide stiffer sentences to those who abuse seniors.  Tammy Rankin, with the Durham Elder Abuse Network, says roughly one in 10 seniors in Canada is being abused either financially, mentally or physically.  In recent years, officials with Durham Police say they’ve averaged about 40 calls a month, regarding some form of elder abuse.  However, experts in the field say a majority of elder abuse often goes un-reported.
