Top economists suggest adding GST into food prices

Two of Canada’s leading economists want Ottawa to re-open one of the hottest issues of the last two decades by expanding the GST to include food. Public health nutritionist with the Durham Health Department Deborah Lay says the rising cost of food poses a threat for low-income families who are already struggling to afford healthy foods. The University professors say Ottawa could bring in an extra $39 billion dollars a year, adding the current collection of sales taxes is highly inefficient.
