Durham residents question a strange noise

Posted by news | Filed under All News Stories, Durham

A number of Durham residents were questioning a strange noise Monday morning.  People reported hearing a wave or wind turbine kind of sound that was very loud.  Although several possible explanations have been explored, nothing has been presented that’s able to point to an official cause for the noise.  The noise was heard sometime around 4:00 am and was recorded by several people.  You can find some of the recordings by clicking here.

It was a very loud wave like sound, and my husband and I heard it around 4am. We tapped the sound, very creepy!

My roommate head it this morning as well, but we’re in Whitby. Still, there have been reports of the same sound being heard all over the world – plenty of vids on Youtube. I’m not sure what to believe…

I also heard the noise on my way to work at 4:45. I’m in Oshawa and it was coming from the southwest. I also described it to my husband as sounding like loud waves.

I heard the noise around 4-00a.m. it sounded like a heavy snow plow going up and down the road, but of course there wasn’t one. Then my neighbour phoned today and asked if I heard a sound as they had!!! We live in the OLive Wilson area and thats a long way from that factory! Where on youtube are the sounds?

I’m in the Wilson and Olive area of Oshawa as well. There was no way I could sleep wondering what the noise was, so I hopped on my bike and rode toward it thinking it was a block or so away. Glad I gave up at Park and Bloor where it didn’t seem very loud at all.

I live at ritson and adelaide and it woke me about 4am and ended about 5am. Stood and looked out the front door – sound was coming from the south west. Totally freaked my out, first thought was a snow pow, but I knew no snow had fallen, wind turbine? Then my mind when into overdrive, didn’t the aliens in the last war of the worlds film sound like that??? Anyways, I so did not get back to sleep. Hope, the sounds not back tonight!!

I live in Oshawa. I got woken up last night at around 4:30 by my dog just choking for no reason, and so I got up and that is when I heard what I thought was either strong wind (when i went outside there was no wind at all), a tordano or an earthquake. when i looked it up this morning i saw that this has been happening all around the world. I really wonder why my dog would start to do that when the sounds were outside. It’s so weird…

I actually got in my car and investigated this properly last night. I heard the noise at around 4 in the morning on Olive Ave and headed west towards it in my car. I stopped off at the Oshawa GO Station, Intrepid Park, Whitby Harbour, anda few other places before confirming it was coming from the Gerdau Plant in South Whitby.

And let me tell you. When I was parked outside the Gerdau front gates, the noise was LOUD!

    January 24th, 2012 at 1:43 am

No release valve gonna make that kind of noise and if it did it would be a consistant burst of air, not the sound of large waves like what I woke up to at 4am Monday morning. Did something happen at the nuclear plant and no one is telling us?? Is it really the guy who stole the spaceship? Or was it some electronic ambient club with really loud outdoor speakers? Perhaps this will just go down with the caramel secret. We just may never know.

  17. Monty Says:
    January 24th, 2012 at 6:21 am

It seems to me that if it were i cracked turbine, systems would have been shut down immediately to remedy the situation, not let it go for 2 1/2 hours… if it were an ‘air product release valve’ there should be history of one going off in the past, and the type of noise it made… in the last 25 years, i’ve heard of nothing like it in Durham. There are plenty of dated videos from around the world. some are probably plants. best explanation i’ve heard so far is the Solar flare hypothesis.

  18. mike Says:
    January 24th, 2012 at 8:15 am

i was at the plant it was a relief valve.. sorry

  19. Chanelle Says:
    January 24th, 2012 at 9:48 am

It definitely wasn’t a relief valve…. Did half the world have a relief valve break too??? I don’t think so… Come on government, you can think of a better excuse than that!

The Local /National Awareness – The North American Homeland Security, require that some Federal, State, Regional, and Municipal/City government protocols where designed to make misleading and deceptive statements to the public in order to allay public fears and to protect an extraordinarily sensitive national security project or to give false or misleading reports when conducting a public interest investigation . The scope of the investigation will vary, depending on the nature of the position and the degree of harm that could cause. But don’t panic; a little bit of effort can help you in understanding the law terms, meanings and definitions. Do your homework on the security, instead of talking out of your ass.

Heard the same sounds everyone is describing at the same time. I was at work in the Thickson & Champlain area of Whitby, outside having a smoke. I didn’t know what it was, but it was very loud and could be heard over the traffic on the 401. I’ve also seen the videos posted on Youtube from people in Oshawa and some from the North end. Seems very unlikely that it would be anything from Gerdau that could be heard all the way in Oshawa’s north end. Very strange!

Holy Crap! Homeland Security? I have no problem believing it was a relief valve discharge. Oxygen and many other gasses are stored at very high pressures. As a tradesman, I know that cracking open a valve on an oxygen cylinder at 2200 psi. makes an ear splitting sound. If a large volume was released, it would certainly make a very loud sound. The air was perfect for transmitting sound that morning, saturated with moisture, a light drizzle. Hearing the sound in Hampton and across the lake to Hamilton and maybe New York doesn’t seem to be too incredible. Beyond that, I’m quite sure it would have been heard via social media, not air.Holy Crap! Homeland Security? I have no problem believing it was a relief valve discharge. There was a solar flare on January 23rd. What you saw & heard were the “Northern Lights” or Aurora Borealis. If you have never seen them before you would think that it was very eerie. Having seen & heard them twice I can safely say from what you all are describing, that is what you encountered..no government conspiracy, no UFO’s, simply a natural phenomenon that totally freaks you out.

Oh my goodness! Thank God other people heard it as well. I have been asking around work here and clients and no one heard this and don’t know what I’m talking about. My husband and I stood at the opened window in our bedroom at 3:30am and thought maybe it was an alarm at the Nuclear Plant, but it was more like a low frequency gonging sound like many of the videos. But, heard all over the world???? idk – that’s just wierd!

I just found these comments and am so glad other people heard it too—woke me up at around 3:30 ish and kept me up until it stopped at 5—-sounded like it was coming southwest of me (live in northwest Oshawa) and it was loud like a grating wave. I have now listened to some of the youtube videos, and that was the sound. My husband slept through it and thought I was imagining things when I told him—my cat didn’t like the noise at all and crawled under the bed! It was so very weird and I have never heard anything like it before.

Same, I hear it every night, its the cops chopper, O’ I remember all of Oshawa wanted one flying around, everybody voted it in ,,,so now you got one: so only complain if you plan to organize to remove it from their budget, then all of us will get some sleep .Welcome sleep unadulterated
    * I haven’t had a full night sleep here for years. I wish you luck, its seems easier to move,
Because you’ll never get rid of that annoying thing.
The speed of change is ultimately bogged by bureaucrats.
