A change is going to be made in the making of loonies and toonies. New versions of the coins will be introduced this spring, made of steel and not nickel. The move will save the Royal Canadian Mint about $16 million a year. It’s estimated that coin-operated industries will have to spend about $40 million to recalibrate machines to recognize the new coins.
