FATALITIES UP ON ONTARIO HIGHWAYS

Posted by news | Filed under All News Stories, Durham, GTA, Toronto

There’s been an alarming jump in the number of fatal crashes on OPP patrolled roads this month, and that’s prompting a crackdown on irresponsible drivers.  Sergeant Dave Woodford says the numbers were actually down in the early part of 2010, but that all changed in the month of July.  There have been 46 traffic deaths so far this July on OPP patrolled roads, compared with 28 in the entire month in 2009.  Woodford says the main causes of death and injury can be attributed to the “big three”…aggressive driving, impaired driving and failure to use seatbelts and car seats.  Commissioner Julian Fantino calls the rise in fatalities disturbing, and says any loss of life due to irresponsible driving is unacceptable.   There were 163 deaths this year, as of last Sunday on OPP patrolled roads, up from 154 in the same period of 2009.
