Durham Region warns of water treatment sales people going door to door

Durham is issuing a warning about the tactics of water treatment sales people going door to door in Port Perry and throughout the region.

John Presta, Director of Environmental Services with the Durham Works Department says these people are trying to sell an expensive service that you don’t need.

“They do provide a service, but it’s not a service that’s required,” explained Presta. “There’s no need to treat the tap water that’s coming in because it’s safe and meets the requirements of the province.”

Regional employees will not show up at your door without a pre-arranged appointment or without your consent to do so.

If someone shows up unannounced, remember the following to protect yourself from scams:

  • Ask for identification. All Regional employees and authorized contractors carry photo ID
  • Did you request this house call? Regional staff will not visit without sending an official letter and/or scheduling an appointment
  • Call the visiting organization, or the Region, to confirm that the visit is legitimate
  • Don’t feel pressured to sign contracts on the spot, or to let anyone into your home
  • Never give out your personal information

Information on water quality testing is available from the region by contacting the Works Department at 905-668-7711 or online here.

Omg. My mother has fallen victim of this. It was not just the water but A/C, HVAC and a Tankless water heater. My mother was lied to about everything and she can not afford it. I hope someone can help me with this.
