Toronto Police warn public of increasing scams
June 18th, 2013 | Comments (0)
Toronto Police would like to make the public aware of “secret shoppers” scams which are advertised on the internet and through email. Police say the scams offer employment to victims, and have the following elements: people are sent cheques and are told to deposit them, and then they are asked to shop at stores like Walmart, Canadian Tire and evaluate the customer service. Victims are always told to evaluate a money transfer and send a bulk of the value of the cashed cheque away. These tasked are usually required to be done in 48 hours. After two weeks the bank notifies the victim to say that the cheque was a forgery and they have to pay the entire amount of the cheque. Police are urging the public to be aware when cashing a cheque from companies or individuals that are unknown to them, and if depositing a suspicious cheque it is suggested that a hold be requested to allow sufficient time for the cheque to properly clear.
