Bad weather continues for GTA…Emergency officials urging motorists to slow down

January 27th, 2012 | Comments (0)

Emergency officials across the GTA, particularly in the northern areas, were forced to deal with hundreds of accidents Friday morning, thanks to the latest blast of winter that brought rain, snow and freezing rain.  Environment Canada has now issued a special weather statement for Saturday.  Officials say much of southern Ontario will see snow with very strong winds starting in the morning, making the roads quite messy.  Meanwhile, many people may not know exactly what to do in the event of an accident or, if they spin out.  Sergeant Shaun Arnott with Durham Regional Police says people should not be calling 911 if there is only property or vehicle damage.  Only call 911 if there are injuries or an actual emergency.  Otherwise, people should call the administration number of their local police service.  Those numbers can be found at the bottom of our “Stormdesk” page along with all weather related cancellations or delays.  You can get their by clicking here.  Arnott says almost all accidents in bad weather are caused by people driving too fast, and officials are urging people to leave plenty of time to get where they’re going and plenty of space between yourself and other vehicles.  The CAA also has some great tips on winter driving.
